The ferry across Lake Michigan, through WI and MN to SD

We were ready to get going on this trip and decided to take a ferry across Lake Michigan and then continue on to the Wisconsin Dells, with the plan to ride in La Crosse WI the following day.  Small world moment:  some National Park Rangers were doing a presentation on board the ferry and we got talking to one of the rangers.  She knew Jana and had just moved from Bend!

The dells are like North Conway on steroids– water parks, ice cream shops, hotels, stores, attractions and more attractions.  We were excited to be headed for La Crosse the next morning.  The trail reports on Trailforks looked good.

Unfortunately, that night, despite weather reports to the contrary, it poured–complete with thunder and lightning and continued on the next morning.  At this point we were getting pretty fed up with our route and hightailed it across Wisconsin and Minnesota into South Dakota.  Two years ago we rode in Mitchell SD and it was pretty lame- around the lake, so we pushed on west of Mitchell for the night.
